I often describe myself as an “IT expert wearing a business hat“. I like to understand the goals of the business and any issues that may be preventing the business from achieving those goals, then use technology to solve those issues. IT and technology are not an end by themselves, but are meant to be used as tools to achieve business goals.

Here are some real life case studies from some of my client projects, where technology has been used to achieve very specific business goals in a measurable way. I’ve carefully selected case studies from businesses that operate in very different areas, and were looking to achieve very different things.

Whatever your particular goals are, I’m confident that with a bit of brain power and some help from technology, we can achieve them together.

Vedic Astrology Web site

Vedic Astrology is a very precise mathematical science from India, many thousands of years old. The client, Stephen Quong, is a famous Vedic Astrologer with many decades of experience helping people using this science. Stephen’s original web site was quite old and was built in HTML, so it was time to do a full “technology refresh” to bring the site up to date. The instructions were to build a simple and elegant design that looks timeless, and yet new.

Case Study: Organic Traffic with SEO

One of my clients in Europe runs a business in travel, selling a digital discount card that is valid at the top restaurants and tours in the city. To get more businesses to sign up to their platform, they needed to demonstrate the benefits to the business partners. We ran an SEO campaign and demonstrated clearly how we could dominate search results within a few weeks using ethical methods. It helped convince more businesses to join the platform.

Web site for Carbon Credits

This web site is for a platform that brings together businesses that need carbon credits to offset their emissions and people/organisations who generate carbon credits. The platform adds technology and proprietary quality processes into the mix to improve measurability and bring full transparency to the entire process. The brief was to build a site that brings together many complicated products and presents them in standard format that is simple and easy to understand.

Case Study: $60k in 3 hours, every month

One of my clients is a very famous artist, with a very active email list, and they were looking to have a steady ongoing income rather than the lumpy income artists usually get from shows or new music releases. An idea I came up with aimed to create a steady income of $60,000 every month for just 3 hours’ work as a starting target.

Web site for fine dining restaurant

My work started from understanding the philosophy of the brand, and how the client wanted to communicate it to customers. After discussions, it was agreed that a light, fresh look with lots of images and some fun moving elements would suit the brand ethos best.

Case Study: Free Army of Salespeople

One of my clients sells a product that cleans CNC machines. The product is great, but getting potential customers to know about it took up a lot of time, effort and money. They wanted to get their product in front of more potential customers. Using the concept of “power of the collective”, we implemented a fully automated affiliate system which rewarded service engineers for referring new customers. Everyone wins: customers, referrers, and my client.

Web Site: AirBnB cottages

The web site is for a pair of cottages located in a lovely green forest in the beautiful Himalayas.

The owner wanted a beautiful web site that brought out the beauty of the cottages and the location. The web site also needed to give prospective clients a good feel about each cottage and activities available in the area, so that they have at hand all the information they need to make a decision and book a stay.

Case Study: Social proof gets increased business

One of my clients runs a high-end restaurant on a farm, 50 kilometres from the nearest city. The food is incredible, but growth was slow through only word of mouth. By using the idea of social proof, we were able to generate more business for them, and now people are finding out about them easily online. We also introduced a fully automated online booking system, making it easier for customers to make reservations online themselves.

Web site: Vedic Fire Ceremony

A Yagya is a vedic fire ceremony that is conducted with a specific intention or goal. My work included not just understanding the many solutions provided for life challenges people face, but also mapping them into products that end customers could understand and relate to. Personally, it was a great honour to experience first hand the deep traditional science behind Yagyas and see how it has helped many people with real issues.

Case Study: Making $40k in 2 weeks

One of my clients is a qualified doctor (gynaecologist) who lives in the US. She is also a certified yoga teacher, and a qualified doctor in Chinese medicine. The revenues of her business came mostly from online consulting sessions, with a small percentage of in-person sessions at a clinic in the city where she lives. By running in-person group retreats on a farm in Italy, she was able to make $40,000 in just two weeks.

Case Study: Saving money with automation

One of my clients is an investment club based in the UK. They were spending a lot of time, effort and money on manually updating their web site to reflect the performance of their many portfolios. With some simple development and automation in place, they were able to provide real-time updates to their members. They now need to put in minimal effort towards updating their web site, just once a year.
